CAN YOU TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF?
"I'm Hannah, 22 years old and I studied liberal arts and sciences. After taking a gap year, I am now doing a master's degree in humanistics. That is actually a combination of sociology and philosophy. I really love playing the saxophone and making music together with people."
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING AT WIJS?
"I have been working at WIJs for almost a year now. I started in my gap year, because I wanted to have a job that puts me more in touch with social problems. I thought that I could give something back with WIJs and also learn something. of the students I speak to."
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT TUTORING?
"First of all, I really enjoy helping people. I often notice that when you work one-on-one, students genuinely want to get better at what they are doing. I also really enjoy thinking about how you can communicate things as conveniently as possible, to empathize with what a student finds important and try to link the information to that."
WHAT IS IT LIKE TO ALSO TUTOR STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT PAYING FOR IT?
"I don't notice much difference in how the students themselves feel about it. I think that all students are enthusiastic and that they want to learn. But I also enjoy tutoring students who don't pay for it because I have the feeling that it really makes a difference that I tutor that student. That it really comes from a kind of necessity."
DO YOU THINK WIJS BIJLES MAKES A DIFFERENCE?
"I am convinced that WIJs makes a difference, because if you have no money or little money to pay for tutoring, then the threshold is very high to arrange that. So perhaps you can get a little compensation somewhere. or something like that, or a discount, but yes, then you first have to consider that that is an option at all. So the fact that it is free for some students sends a signal that everyone deserves tutoring."
"I think it's really important to distribute that fairly, no matter what your background is in terms of money, language skills and things like that. I think it could have made a big difference."
WHAT IS IT LIKE TO WORK AT WIJS, IF YOU WOULD HAVE TO DESCRIBE IT TO A NEW TUTOR?
"You clearly notice that everyone at WIJs wants to do the best they can. I don't have the idea, as I might with other organizations, that I have to do everything according to strict rules that a large organization has devised at a great distance from the students. So I can work in a much more nuanced way. I can therefore simply take a little more time for what is important, if the student needs it. There is a real bond of trust."
"I really enjoy tutoring, but because I work here I don't have to feel guilty that I am contributing to inequality of opportunity. So that makes it really cool, that I can do what I like and for a good reason."
